Understanding Web Services

A Half-day Seminar

Web services are the biggest idea in distributed computing today. They can expose Internet applications to customers in more effective ways, enable business-to-business integration across the Internet, and even connect disparate applications on internal networks. A technology that could address any one of these areas would be interesting; one that can address all three is bound to be important. And because the core technologies–XML, SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI–are supported by all major vendors, web services will affect all organizations, regardless of which vendor’s camp they’re in. Microsoft in particular is placing a large bet on web services. The strongest evidence for this is the company’s investment in its .NET My Services initiative, intended to provide a standard set of commonly useful web services.
This seminar describes the core web services technologies and provides an overview of various vendor technologies in this area. It also takes a more detailed look at .NET My Services, examining both the technology and the larger issues this effort raises. The goal is to provide an accurate, independent description of web services today.

Audience

The target audience for this seminar is decision makers, architects, analysts, developers, and anyone else interested in web services technologies. Some technical background in distributed computing is assumed, but this is not a programming course.
